Casten Statement on Texas Abortion Ban

Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Congressman Sean Casten (D-IL) released the following statement on the Texas abortion ban:

"Texas' radical anti-abortion law is a devastating, horrific and blatant violation of the rights of all birthing people — and a full-scale assault on patients and health care providers that ripped away access to safe, comprehensive medical care for millions overnight.

"Texas is not alone. In 2021, Republican lawmakers in 16 states have enacted over 83 new abortion restrictions, with an additional 561 bills introduced across 47 states to attempt to undermine equitable access to health care every day.

"As a fierce defender of reproductive freedom in the Congressional district formerly held by Henry Hyde, I know equitable access to abortion care requires ending the Hyde amendment in addition to protecting Roe against state-level bans like the one in Texas. I will continue to work with my colleagues to defend access to affordable health care for all people, no matter where they live, where they work, or where they get their health insurance."

"We must pass the Women's Health Protection Act (WHPA) H.R. 3755 to help protect access to abortion nationwide. This federal bill would create a statutory right for providers to provide abortion care, and patients to receive that care, free from medically unnecessary restrictions and bans."
